The need to somehow express measurement goes back to prerecorded history. The
earliest authenticated unit of length - the cubit, defined as the length of the arm from the
end of the middle finger to the elbow - was in use in Egypt during the construction of the
great pyramids. Since that time, the science of measurement, or metrology, has been a
constantly evolving discipline.
And yet contrasting sharply with these centuries of evolution in measurement, the
Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) has in just a little more than 30 years become the
linchpin in modern metrology. For any company that relies on precise measurements in this
age of increased productivity, the CMM is an integral part of the solution.
